(BATTLE CREEK) – Eastern Equine Encephalitis has claimed the life of a Mexican gray wolf at Binder Park Zoo.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services along with zoo officials confirmed on Tuesday the death of one of their Mexican gray wolf pups from EEE earlier this month. In addition, a possible second case is still being tested.

Other pups in the litter and both parents are being watched, but all appear to be healthy.

That brings the number of cases of EEE in Calhoun County to three. One was confirmed in a human and another in a horse.

Health Department officials say EEE infection in dogs is rare, but there have been some cases in domestic canines.

On their website, zoo officials encourage visitors to use insect repellents with DEET in them when they visit the zoo. The facility is also planning to provide visitors to the zoo with access to bug spray stations throughout the park.
