(UNDATED) - Two LaGrange men are in jail after a high speed chase that began in LaGrange County and ended near Colon in St. Joseph County Thursday evening.

A LaGrange County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop the vehicle in the area of 750 North and 800 East around 8 PM, but the driver refused to stop.

The chase headed north into Michigan, going through Burr Oak. Stop sticks were deployed north of Burr Oak and blew out the front driver’s side tire.

The vehicle continued at high speed into a corn field where the alleged driver, 44 year old Kevin Smith of LaGrange, bailed out and fled on foot.

The passenger, 34 year old Richard Moore of LaGrange, was taken into custody without incident.

Smith eluded officers for about an hour. A Michigan State Police K-9 officer and his handler located Smith hiding along the Little Swan River in Colon.

Both men are held in the St. Joseph County Jail awaiting extradition to Indiana.
