(LANSING) – Starting today, there will be a ban on flavored e-cigarette products across Michigan.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the ban, which is designed to halt the sale of all non traditional flavors of tobacco in vaping products, including menthol and candy flavors.

In a media release, Whitmer says her number one priority as Governor is keeping Michigan's children safe. She says companies selling vaping products are using candy flavors that gets children hooked on nicotine, and are using misleading claims to help promote the belief that these products are safe.

Whitmer says the ban will finally put an end to these irresponsible and deceptive practices and help protect the health of Michiganders.

Many different organizations are supporting the ban, which will be in effect for six months, and may be renewed.

Stores and businesses that sell flavored e-cigarette products could be fined, among other penalties. Several shop owners filed injunctions, but none of them have been honored.
