(LANSING) – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessell has filed a lawsuit against a Hillsdale County puppy mill operator.

In a news release, Nessell says she filed the suit late last week against Paul Steury, following an investigation after allegations were made that he was running an inhumane and unsanitary puppy peddling operation.

The complaints against Steury were made by Monroe County Animal Control and the Humane Society of the United States. The complaints alleged that Steury was selling sick puppies and adult dogs. He is also accused of providing false documentation of the breed, age, health and vaccination histories.

During the investigation, Nessell says Steury admitted to killing at least six young dogs simply because he could not sell them.

The Michigan Humane Society has helped with the investigation and recently recovered more that 33 dogs from Steury. They have undergone medical and behavioral evaluations to determine the placement is best for each animal and a majority of the dogs have been placed in safe homes.

Nessell says her office is seeking injunctive relief along with fines against Steury.
