Hostage Situation Ends With Arrests

(MILTOWN TOWNSHIP) – A hostage situation ended with the arrest of two individuals.

Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke says at 1:35 PM Wednesday members of the Fugitive Apprehension Street Team, in conjunction with the U.S. Marshal's Service went to a residence in the 33,000 block of Redfield Street in Cass County's Milton Township.

FAST members went to the residence to gain further information or to locate a fugitive out of LaPorte County, Indiana. The individual was wanted for petition of revocation of bond and two charges of failure to appear. All three were in regards to a robbery incident.

Officers found the fugitive, a woman and a young child inside the residence. The fugitive showed a firearm, and officers established a perimeter around the house.

Local Michigan authorities were called in for assistance. That included the Cass County Sheriff's Department, Dowagiac Police, the Pokagon Tribal Police, Edwardsburg Police and the Michigan State Police. Negotiators from the Cass and Berrien County Sheriff's Departments and the State Police talked with the fugitive for several hours.

Just after 11 PM the child was released from the house.

At 3:32 AM Thursday, a tactical team breached the attached garage door of the residence. Just a few minutes later the fugitive and the women exited the house and were taken into custody.

Their names have not been released, pending arraignment in Cass County District Court.
