(BRONSON) – Authorities say a Branch County woman lost money in a scam.
The Branch County Sheriff's Department says they were notified by a woman who claimed she was contacted by telephone that she won $40 million in a foreign lottery and needed to pay $30,000 to get the money.
As they investigated the incident, officials realized it was a scam and the woman would not be able to get her money back. The victim still believed she was going to win the $40 million.
Law enforcement officials say telephone scams like this that prey on the elderly is a continuing issue, not just in Branch County but all around Michigan. If anyone receives a suspicious call should contact their local low enforcement department.
