(UNDATED) – A child was rescued from a Cass County river over the weekend.

Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke says his department was called to the Dowagiac River near Arthur Dodd Memorial Park at 4:24 PM Saturday. Deputies arrived and found an 8 year old boy that was 20 feet from shore, hanging on to a submerged tree in fast moving water.

Deputies along with the Pokagon Fire Department went into the water and were able to safely rescue the child.

Behnke says their investigation determined that the boy and his mother had been kayaking on the Dowagiac River when high water levels and fast currents caused the child's kayak to overturn. Properly approved personal flotation devices were being worn at the time.

The boy was taken to Lakeland Niles Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Assisting deputies were the Pokagon Tribal Police, the Michigan State Police, the Sister Lakes and Indian Lake Water Rescue Teams and the SMCAS Ambulance Company.
