(COLON TOWNSHIP) – A Bellevue, Michigan man drowned over the weekend in a Colon area lake.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite says his department was called to the Leidy Lake Campground just before 4 PM Saturday for a drowning. Deputies determined 24 year old David Burns, Jr. was walking in the lake and unknowingly walked into deep water.

Burns did not know how to swim and went under the water. He was not breathing when he was recovered by family members and other individuals who transported him by boat to the campground beach, where they started lifesaving measures.

The Colon Fire and Rescue along with Life Care Ambulance arrived and attempted to revive Burns, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Also assisting were the Colon Police Department and the St.
Joseph County Sheriff's Marine Patrol.
