(AUBURN) – Indiana State Police are investigating a shooting incident involving an Auburn Police Department officer, at the request of the department.

Preliminary information revealed that at 11:30 Thursday morning, an Auburn Police officer made a traffic stop of a motorcycle at the corner of Phillip Street and DeKalb Avenue. The motorcycle was driven by a man and there was a female passenger.

The officer approached the motorcycle, and the driver got off the bike. As the officer got closer, the driver pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at the officer, who pulled and shot at least one round from his weapon, striking the driver.

Additional officers were called to the scene and provided first aid to the motorcycle driver. He was taken by ambulance to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. His condition is unknown.

The female passenger was not injured in the incident.

Auburn Police officials say that per their department policy, the officer will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation. Once the investigation is done, Indiana State Police will turn over their findings to the DeKalb County Prosecutor for review.
