BRUSHY PRAIRIE - Prairie Heights Community Schools celebrated the graduation of their 56th group of high school seniors Friday evening. This year’s class was led by Valedictorian Amy German and Salutatorian Lindsey Scheidler.

During her Valedictorian speech, German said the class of 2020 had “been different from the classes before them, so her speech should be different to”. She didn’t pull inspirational messages from the Internet or quote someone famous, instead she focused on things she and her classmates did first, that other classes before them had never done.

German talked about how the class of 2020 was the first ever graduating seniors who had their ceremony outside on the football field.

German plans to attend Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana to study architecture.

Like many of the challenges already tackled in 2020, Friday’s ceremony had its obstacles. Due to the pandemic attendance was limited. Those who couldn’t attend, specifically many grandparents, were counting on a local company who made a commitment to video stream the ceremony. Just a few hours before, school officials found out the videographer was cancelling his services.

Because of quick action and teamwork by administrators and staff, graduation was still filmed by a teacher at the high school. Another teacher was able to Facebook Live graduation from a phone, until the high quality video could be uploaded to the high school’s facebook page (which we have also shared on our facebook page).

Just like a football game on a fall Friday night, the unique scenery of Hubert Cline Field made graduation ceremonies very memorable for the class of 2020. In all, it was a perfect night that not even COVID-19 could ruin.
