Steuben County Surveyor Dies Unexpectedly

(ANGOLA) – A Steuben County official died unexpectedly Tuesday morning.

Authorities say County Surveyor Larry K. Gilbert passed away while working in his office in the Steuben Community Center. He was 62.

Gilbert was an elected official, and held the office of Steuben County Surveyor for 36 years. He was very active in his community. He was a member of the Metz Church of Christ and was active in the Republican Party.

Gilbert was a 1976 graduate of Hamilton High School and later from Indiana University, where he earned a degree in accounting. Shortly after graduation, he went to work in county government then was elected surveyor in 1982.

As the County Surveyor, Gilbert presided over the Steuben County Drainage Board.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Kelly Gilbert, along with his daughter.

Visitation for Larry Gilbert will be from 4 until 7 PM Friday, October 2, at the Weicht Funeral Home in Angola.
