County Commission Approves Sending Letter To Governor
By: Mike Stiles - Wednesday, October 7, 2020

(CENTREVILLE) – The St. Joseph County Commission will look for guidance from Governor Gretchen Whitmer on the matter of Prosecutor John McDonough.

During Tuesday's meeting, the Commissioners voted to contact Whitmer regarding McDonough. ...... {LISTEN}.

During their Executive Session on September 30, the Commission discussed the possibility of contacting Whitmer and asking what the appropriate steps would be in the situation the County is facing with McDonough.

Questions about McDonough's job have been brought before the Commissioners since his arrest in May on a charge of drunk driving, and since his arrest in September for violating his bond. Specifically, comments from the public have focused on the fact that McDonough is continuing to be paid his salary of $120,000 a year, and he has not been in the office.

Other questions brought to the Commission have been about removing McDonough from office. Commission Chairman Dennis Allen says many members of the community say the situation with McDonough is very similar to when St. Joseph County Circuit Court Judge James Noecker was removed from the bench by the Michigan Supreme Court following a crash he was in in 2003.

No timeline was given on when the Commission expected to hear back from Whitmer.
