(ELKHART COUNTY) – One of the people injured in a Thursday afternoon crash on the Indiana Toll Road has died from his injuries.

Indiana State Police say the three people in the vehicle were 56 year old Jeffrey Strain, his wife and front seat passenger, 49 year old Christine Strain, and their 17 year old son Lukas, all from Stevensville, Michigan. Lukas was in the back seat and died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the crash.

Troopers say a semi driven by 37 year old Donta Johns of Chicago was driving east in Elkhart County near Mile Marker 97 at 4:45 PM Thursday, hauling a tanker. Johns started to slow down because of another accident and shifted into the other lane, when the Strain vehicle hit him from behind.

The Strains were all flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital. Both Jeffery and Christine Strain suffered serious but non life-threatening injures. They are listed in stable condition.

The Toll Road was closed until after 9:30 PM Thursday for crash reconstruction experts to examine the scene.
