(WHITE PIGEON TOWNSHIP) – Several people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash over the weekend.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite says at 5:20 AM Saturday, his department was sent to U.S. 12 near Oak Street in White Pigeon Township. Investigators determined that 60 year old Joseph Nelson of Sturgis was backing his semi and trailer into a private drive on U.S. 12. A Ford Edge, driven by 46 year old Charles Blackmon of White Pigeon, struck the
semi. Neither driver sustained any major injuries.

While both vehicles were still in the roadway, a silver Ford-150 pickup, driven by 46 year old Tiburcio Cruz of Sturgis, stopped to avoid striking either of the damaged vehicles. Cruz's vehicle was struck by a pick up driven by 18 year old Luciano Alcantor of Sturgis.

Cruz was removed from his vehicle by White Pigeon Fire and Rescue and flown from the scene to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo with major injuries. His condition has not been released.

Alcantor and a passenger in the Cruz vehicle, 26 year old Jonathan Garcia of Sturgis, were both taken to Sturgis Hospital by Life Care Ambulance.
