(KENDALLVILLE) – A suspect is in custody following a police pursuit and a shooting incident in Northeast Indiana.

Indiana State Police say it all started shortly after 11:30 PM Wednesday when officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department attempted to stop a car for reckless driving on the northwest side of the city. The driver, later identified as 40 year old Justin Weikel of LaOtto, came to a stop, but sped away as the officer was walking to his vehicle.

The pursuit went through Northern Allen, DeKalb and Noble Counties. The Noble and DeKalb County Sheriff's Departments and the Indiana State Police joined in, and the chase eventually came to an end at 12:15 AM when Weikel stopped on Waits Road near Main Street at the Johnson Mobile Home Park, south of Kendallville.

Weikel refused to get out of the vehicle and began to shoot at the police. Officers returned fire and set up a perimeter around the automobile. SWAT Officers from the Fort Wayne Police and the Indiana State Police were called to the scene.

At 1:45 AM, SWAT officers were able to take Weikel into custody. He was then treated by paramedics and transported to a Fort Wayne Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Weikel was found to have an outstanding warrant out of Noble County.

This remains an ongoing criminal investigation. Once it is completed, information will be turned over to the Noble County Prosecutor for review and a determination if criminal charges will be filed.
