(LAGRANGE) – A lawsuit has been filed against former Wolcottville Clerk-Treasurer June Wood.

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita filed the lawsuit in LaGrange Superior Court on March 3. It is seeking over $25,000, which Rokita claims Wood and Western Surety Company still owe the State of Indiana. Western Surety provided Wood with an annual bond in her position as Clerk-Treasurer.

The State of Indiana started an investigation of Wood after they received complaints of problems with the Town of Wolcottville's financial records. The State Board Of Accounts was brought in to conduct an audit of the Town's financial books.

According to Rokita's office, the lawsuit says that audit disclosed malfeasance, misfeasance and or nonfeasance by Wood. It also says that Wood made improper payments that were personal in nature; and that she failed to provide supporting documents for over $6,900 worth of expenses.

The lawsuit also claims that Wood failed to pay claims and remit taxes and other charges in a timely manner, which resulted in the Town incurring penalties, interest and other charges of over $24,000.

Several other charges are also facing Wood in the lawsuit.

Wood was appointed to the Clerk-Treasurer position in 2014 by a Republican caucus. She later ran for and was elected to the position.

Wood was criminally charged in January 2019 by Special Prosecutor Thomas Wilson who charged her with two counts of felony theft. In December 2019, Wood agreed to a plea deal of a misdemeanor count of conversion in return for the State dropping the remaining charges against her.

Wood was sentenced to one year probation and ordered to pay a one dollar fine.
