(CENTREVILLE) – A 9 year old boy has been charged with shooting his adopted mother in Fawn River Township.
According to WWMT and WOOD TV, the boy was arraigned Wednesday in St. Joseph County District Court on charges of open murder and felony firearm in the Monday morning shooting death of Pauline Randol. The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department was called to the Randol home at 68986 Plumb School Road, where Randol was found in the front room of the home. She had been shot with a rifle.
Family members say the boy has a history of mental health issues and just started taking some new medication.
The child is undergoing psychiatric evaluations at a state correctional facility in an undisclosed location.
The child was a student at Congress School. Sturgis Schools Superintendent Dr. Art Ebert issued a release, saying the community has experienced a tragic event. He says as a school district, it is our goal to provide support to our students, staff, and the community. Ebert says they are limited in what we can share due to privacy laws and the sensitive nature of this tragedy.
