April 2019 Jobless Rates Down Around SW Michigan

(LANSING) – Jobless rates were down in April around Southwest Michigan.

The Bureau of Labor Market Information and Strategic Initiatives says the jobless rate in St. Joseph County was at 3.7 percent in April, down from 4.1 percent in March. One year ago, the jobless rate was at 3.1 percent.

Hillsdale County had the largest drop in the area, going from 4.5 percent to 3.5 percent. Cass County went from 4.6 percent to 3.7 percent, while Branch County dropped from an even 4 percent to 3.2 percent.

Economic Specialist Dr. Leonidas Murembya says seasonal job gains were recorded in Leisure and Hospitality, Retail Trade, Professional and Business Services and in Construction and Mining.
