(CENTREVILLE) – A resolution was approved Tuesday in support of fixing the Langley Covered Bridge north of Centreville.
St. Joseph County Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of the resolution during their regular meeting. The resolution was a result from a conversation the St. Joseph County Road Commission had about the bridge. Road Commission Engineer Garrett Myland said there were three possible options: fixing the bridge as it is; closing the bridge; or building a new bridge next to the current one.
Myland said he was in favor of fixing the bridge, which was constructed in 1887. He said the one time cost would be between $1.5 million and $2 million.
When that information was brought to the County Commission during their May 29 executive committee meeting, the Commission agreed that fixing the bridge was the correct solution and started drafting the resolution.
The bridge is named after Thomas W. Langley and family, who helped establish the Village of Centreville. It is also the longest remaining wooded covered bridge in Michigan.
The resolution says the County Commission feels strongly about preserving this historic landmark for future generations. The resolution also calls for the Road Commission to get approval from the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office for the work.
A copy of the resolution will be sent to the Road Commission.
