County Commission Agrees To Help Fund EDC

(CENTREVILLE) – St. Joseph County will continue to give financial support to an organization that helps with business recruitment and retention.

During Tuesday's meeting the County Commission unanimously voted to give $140,000 to the St. Joseph County Economic Development Corporation. Of that amount, $120,000 would go to the EDC for business expansion and retention and bringing in new businesses. The other $20,000 would be used to hire a firm to help the EDC with branding.

The EDC developed a partnership with Southwest Michigan First five years ago to help them with their mission. EDC Board President Ken Jones says with the money given to the EDC over the years, they have helped businesses invest more funds back into the County. ...... {LISTEN}.

There were concerns that only the larger communities in St. Joseph County would benefit from the EDC and Southwest Michigan First partnership. Jones says that has not been the case. ...... {LISTEN}.

Several people spoke to the Commission before their vote on the funding request, saying they approved of the EDC and the work they have been doing.

The money for the EDC will be coming from the Delinquent Tax Revolving Loan Fund. The Commissioners also voted to take $50,000 from the fund to give to the St. Joseph County Road Commission for work on Constantine Road, and they voted to take $200,000 from the fund to create a revolving loan fund.
