Sturgis, MI

(STURGIS) – The City of Sturgis is considering a raise in their operating millage.

During Wednesday's meeting, City Clerk Ken Rhodes shared with the City Commission that a public hearing will be held during their June 28 meeting to set the operating millage rate for the upcoming year. There has been discussion during the recent budget workshops on changing the rate, and Rhodes was asking for direction from the Commission.

Vice Mayor Jon Good asked his fellow Commissioners to considering raising the operating millage from 10.0285 to 10.4623 mills.

Rhodes explains how much the increase will raise. ...... {LISTEN}.

Good shares why he would like to see the Commission support that increase. ...... {LISTEN}.

Good says if the millage request is approved, he hopes the additional money would be used to restaff the Fire Department with a Fire Marshall, and the Police Department with another officer. Those positions were eliminated several years ago due to funding issues.

The Commission approved putting the 10.4623 request up for the public hearing.
