CHA Tracking Whooping Cough Outbreak In St. Joseph County

(THREE RIVERS) – Whooping Cough cases in St. Joseph County are on the rise.

Rebecca Burns, Health Officer with the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency says they are tracking a larger than expected number of Whooping Cough cases in the county, primarily within the Amish communities. Burns advises anyone who has had contact with a person who may have symptoms of Whooping Cough to seek immediate medical attention and stay home to minimize exposure to others.

Those symptoms include a runny nose, sneezing, low grade fever, a cough that worsens and makes a “whooping” sound.

Burns urges all adults 19 years and older, who have not previously received a Tdap vaccine to get a one time dose, or the Td booster.

The CHA offers free vaccinations to qualifying families with children age 18 or younger through the Vaccines For Children program. This is for children who are not insured or whose insurance does not cover immunizations.

The CHA may also be able to assist adults who lack vaccine insurance coverage to get a free Tdap booster.

For more information on the recommended immunizations, you can call the CHA office nearest you. In St. Joseph County, the number is 269-273-2161. In Branch County, you can call 517-279-9561, or in Hillsdale County 517-437-7395.
