Sturgis, MI

(STURGIS) – After 15 months of planning and construction, an area for Sturgis residents to bring their dogs is now open.

Tuesday afternoon, the grand opening for the Sturgis Bark Park was held. The park is located in Depot Park on West Main Street.

Eric Thurston, a member of the Bark Park Committee, says he is
impressed by how quickly this project was completed. ...... {LISTEN}.

The idea for the Bark Park came out of discussions held in 2016 about the number of dogs that a household could have in the City.

Thurston thanked the Bark Park Committee for all of the work they did. ...... {LISTEN}.

Thurston says the Committee found the Sturgis community to be generous with donations of all sizes. Citizens made contributions through a crowdfunding campaign with Patronicity. If the City could raise $12,000, then the Michigan Economic Development Corporation would match that amount from the Public Spaces Community Places Program.

Sturgis received the $12,000 from the MEDC, after raising over $14,000 locally.

In addition, the Sturgis Area Community Foundation also contributed funds towards the project.

The park features a large dog section and a smaller dog section. There are also watering stations with running water and waste stations in both areas.
