National Influenza Vaccination Week

(UNDATED) – National Influenza Vaccination Week runs until December 9.

It's designed to provided public health care professionals the opportunity to work together to promote to the public the importance of getting a flu vaccine and also remind everyone that it is not too late to get a vaccine.

Valarie Newton, Director of Personal Health and Disease Prevention for the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency says influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs. While the flu virus can be detected year round in the United States, it is most common during the fall and winter months.

Children under the age of 5, adults 65 and older, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems have a high risk of developing flu complications. Symptoms include cough, fever, sore throat, headaches, chills, fatigue, stuffy or runny nose and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea.

Newton says the best defense against influenza is to receive an annual vaccine. It causes antibodies to develop in the body two weeks after vaccination, which provide protection against infection.

To get a flu shot, you can contact you doctor, or you can call the CHA office near you and make an appointment.
