Commission Passes Park Millage

(CENTREVILLE) – The St. Joseph County Commission narrowly passed a new millage for county parks during their Tuesday meeting.

By a 3-2 vote, the Commission approved a resolution asking for .25 mills for a four year period, which is expected to generate almost $485,000 per year. The millage will not only help the parks, it will also be used to help offset deficits in the County's General Fund.

Commissioners Kathy Pangle and Dennis Allen cast the “No” votes.

Commissioner Dan Czajkowski shared with the audience the County's General Fund has been taking a hit for the last several years because the operating millage has not changed since 1973 when it was established at 4.76 mills. Funding for the Parks was moved to the Delinquent Tax Fund and in the last few years, $1.4 million from that
fund has gone to park improvement projects.

However, that fund can no longer support the Parks Department, which is why the millage was proposed.

Czajkowski says he and Commissioner Dennis Allen met with Finance Director Ryan Post to get a better understanding of the millage and the overall financial situation the County is in. ...... {LISTEN}.

The parks millage would not only help the Parks Department, it would also help to reimburse the General Fund approximately $50,000 starting in 2019.

Czajkowski says by approving the parks millage along with other cost saving measures that Post has proposed, the County will be able to right their ship and get back to operating in the black in just a few years.
