(STURGIS) – Medical Marijuana was the topic of a work session Wednesday for the Sturgis City Commission.

During their meeting February 14, the Commission three different times voted down proposed changes to the City's Zoning Codes that were presented by the Planning Commission, allowing for medical marijuana based businesses to operate in the city. One of the sticking points was the buffer zone of 250 feet between these businesses and parks and schools. Some Commissioners wanted that zone to be increased to 1,000.

One of the questions asked by the Commission Wednesday was how difficult has it been for individuals who use medical marijuana to get the product. Eric Lutz of Edwardsburg was in the audience and shared his experience with the Commission. ...... {LISTEN}.

Lutz says there are no provisioning centers in the southwest part of the state, which makes it difficult for patients to get what they need. He says by the State of Michigan regulating the businesses, you are not only creating a financial gain, but you are also making a safer product for those who use it.

The Commissioners made no decisions Wednesday on what they will do about the matter. Mayor Robert Hile told the audience if the Commission should bring this up again during a regular meeting it would be publicized so the community could come in and give their comments.
