(STURGIS) – The first three candidates for the Sturgis Schools Superintendent position were interviewed Monday night.

During a special meeting, the Board of Education met with three of the six candidates they selected to come in for interviews for the Superintendent's position. Current Superintendent Dr. Tom Langdon is retiring at the end of the month.

The Board spoke with Kristy Spann, Executive Director of Education Services with the Brandon School District; Kevin Robydek, Middle School Principal for Portland Public Schools, and Nicole Airgood, Assistant Superintendent for Sturgis Public Schools.

The Board asked each candidate what they thought were some of the challenges facing the school district. All three commented on funding from the State as being a major concern not only for Sturgis but all school districts in the state.

Airgood says another concern is reaching the 15 percent fund balance for the district and maintaining it.

Interviews will continue this afternoon with Karen Sherwood, Superintendent of Kalkaska Public Schools at 5 PM; Jonathan Whan, Superintendent of Grant Public Schools at 6:30 PM and Arthur Ebert, Deputy Superintendent of the West Bloomfield School District at 8 PM.

The interviews will be in the Board Room of the Sturgis Central Commons and are open to the public.
