(STURGIS) – Some work is going to be done to a Sturgis park.

During their meeting last week, the Sturgis City Commission was presented with a proposal to do some upgrades to Oaklawn Park on South Nottawa Street. City Manager Mike Hughes shares that some of the equipment will be removed, some swings and slides will be moved. The newer equipment will be kept and five new pieces will be added to the park, and sidewalks will be added for better access to the park and the shelter.

In addition, the roller hockey rink will also be refurbished.

Hughes says the City budgeted $80,000 for the project with the addition of a $25,000 grant from the Sturgis Area Community Foundation, which was not included in the budget. The City also applied for and received a Department of Natural Resources Passport Program Grant for $45,000.

The City received bids on the project. The low bid was from Frederick Construction Incorporated for $101,000 with an alternate bid requested for substituting the playground area border with a concrete curb in the amount of almost $14,000. Along with a construction contingency of 10 percent, the total cost of the project will be $126,352.

The Commission unanimously approved the request to do the work.
