(LANSING) – While it may not feel like Spring it is time to start getting prepared for spring type weather.

Governor Rick Snyder had declared April 8 through the 14 as Michigan's Severe Weather Awareness Week. With that in mind, the Michigan State Police and Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division are asking all Michigan residents to participate in a voluntary statewide tornado drill on Wednesday at 1 PM.

On Wednesday, alerts will be sounded on participating radio and television stations along with NOAA weather radios.

While tornadoes can occur during any time of the year, they are especially common during the late spring and early summer months. The average lead time for tornadoes to develop is 10 to 15 minutes, which means people need to be ready to react quickly when a warning is issued.

Captain Chris Kelenski, Deputy State Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security says due to the unpredictable nature of a tornado, people must be ready well in advance. He says April 11 is not just about testing emergency alerts. This is an opportunity for Michigan residents and businesses to practice their emergency plans as if it were a real event.
