(STURGIS) – There are four options surrounding the Career Technical Education or CTE Program in St. Joseph County.

That was the way it was presented to the Sturgis Board of Education during their study session Monday. St. Joseph County ISD Superintendent Teresa Belote was at the meeting as part of her listening tour around the county.

Belote shared that last year, there was a plan to present a 2.7 mill Enhancement Millage to county residents. This would have covered the building of a CTE center in the county. However, there was some discourse about that proposal so it was shelved.

In speaking with businesses and economic development leaders, Belote says the question she keeps hearing is “What's next?”. Her her mind, Belote says there are four options. The first is to just keep doing what they have been, which according to Belote has pros and cons. ...... {LISTEN}.

Belote says a second option is to increase slightly some of what's missing. ...... {LISTEN}.

Belote says this option would not need a millage to see it done, but it would be on the backs of local general education budgets.

A third option would be a CTE millage which would go up to one mill. That would not create a center, but would help with career counselors and on the job training.

The fourth option is to re-introduce the 2.7 mill Enhancement Millage.

Belote says none of these plans should move forward until the
community can get behind one of them completely.
