Firework Safety For Independence Day

(COLDWATER) – The Fourth Of July, like all holidays, can be fun times with great memories.

The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency wants to make sure everyone knows about, and remembers firework safety.

Jim Cook, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for the CHA, says if not handled properly, fireworks can cause burns and eye injuries in children and adults. The best way to protect your family is to not use any fireworks at home. Attend local fireworks displays and leave the dangerous part to the professionals.

If you choose to have a fireworks show at home, Cook says to first check with your city, village or township for rules on when it is okay to shoot off fireworks.

You should also keep these safety tips in mind: kids should never play with fireworks. If you give children sparklers, make sure they keep them outside and away from their face and clothing. Also, only buy legal fireworks that have a label with the manufacturer's name and directions on them.

Never try to make you own fireworks; don't hold them in your hand while lighting them; never throw or point fireworks at someone; light one firework at a time and have a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of
an accident.

You should also soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them in a trash can.
