Millage Questions On Tuesday's Primary Ballot
Tuesday Aug 07, 2018 10:14am

By: Mike Stiles

(UNDATED) – In addition to voting for candidates, some St. Joseph County residents will have millage proposals to decide in Tuesday's primary election.

All registered voters in the county will be asked to cast a ballot regarding the renewing of the St. Joseph County Transportation Authority millage.

During a visit to the WBET Morning Show, recently retired CTA Executive Director Steve Yorks explains that the millage is approximately one-third of the annual budget, bringing in just over $600,000. They also receive State and Federal aid, contracts with area agencies and grants to help out.

The .33 of a mill is the same amount that has been asked for by the CTA since the millage was first brought to voters in 2007. If approved it will be in effect for a four year period.

Voters in the Burr Oak School District are being asked to approve a proposal to allow the School to levy the statutory rate of not to exceed 18 mills on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law.

Residents of Flowerfield Township are being presented with a proposal to increase up to 1 mill for five years for fire protection and ambulance service within the Township. The increase of 1 mill would raise an estimated $64,307 in the first year.

Colon Township residents shall see a proposal for .8944 mills for five years to provide funds for operating, maintaining, constructing and equipping the Colon Township Library.

Polls will be open until 8 PM Tuesday.

If you cast your vote at the Sturges-Young Civic Center and Auditorium, please enter through the front door. Voting booths will be in the upper level this year and the front door provides better access to ramps and elevators to those who need them.
