(CENTREVILLE) – There are three contested races for seats on the St. Joseph County Commission.

In the Third District, which is made up of Florence, Lockport, Nottawa and Sherman Townships, incumbent Dennis Allen is being challenged by Judy Nelson.

Incumbent Fourth District Commissioner Daniel Czajkowski is being challenged by Elizabeth O'Dell.

In the Fifth District, made up of the City of Sturgis and Fawn River Township, Kenneth Malone and Richard Homan are running for the seat that had previously been held by John Dobberteen who is not seeking re-election.

During a recent Meet The Candidates forum, hosted by Super Hits 99.3, WBET, Fox Sports Radio 1230 and the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce, the candidates were asked what is the purpose of county government. Allen was the first to answer and said the purpose is to maintain the budget and live within its means along with setting and following policies and procedures.

Nelson says the role of county government is to serve the people through the mandated and unmandated services.

Incumbent Fourth District Commissioner Daniel Czajkowski says the Commission's purpose is to listen to the constituents and the manage the budget as presented

O'Dell agreed with Czajkowski.

Malone's answer to the questions was similar to some of the other candidates, with the purpose of being managing the budget and listening to the citizens.

Richard Homan was not available to attend the forum.
