Michigan baseball tops Florida State 2-0
(OMAHA) – Junior starting pitcher Tommy Henry tossed a three-hit complete-game shutout on Monday to help lead the University of Michigan baseball team to a 2-0 victory over Florida State in the Wolverines' second game of the College World Series. Henry's historic outing marked the third College World Series complete-game shutout in program history, as he joined Marvin Wisniewski (June 11, 1953 vs. Stanford) and Steve Howe (June 2, 1978 vs. Baylor). With a strikeout in the fifth, Henry (11-5) also broke Michigan's single-season record for strikeouts previously held by Oliver Jaskie and Jim Burton (119). Henry, who finished with 10 strikeouts for the day, now has 127 for the year. Much like the opening game of the CWS, the Wolverines scored first. Sophomore Jesse Franklin put Michigan on the board with a solo homer down the right-field line on just the second pitch of the game. Michigan also put runners in scoring position in the second and third innings, but did not add to its lead until the fifth. Sophomore Jordan Nwogu sent a one-out single through the right side and took third on a base hit from Franklin. With runners on the corners and two outs, senior Jimmy Kerr came up with a clutch base hit to left field that scored Nwogu and gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead. Michigan is just one win away from the College World Series finals, and it will take the field next on Friday. The Wolverines will face the winner of this Wednesday's contest between Florida State and Texas Tech.
