Red Wings still in talks with Thomas Vanek
Thursday Jul 13, 2017 12:00am

(DETROIT) – The Detroit Red Wings remain in contact with Thomas Vanek. Nearly two weeks into free agency, Vanek, 33, still is unsigned, even though he is coming off a good season. A few teams have inquired about him, but the sense is he wants to return to Detroit if possible. His agent and the Red Wings are keeping in contact, but there are hurdles to clear. For starters, the Red Wings don’t have much salary cap space, with $5 million earmarked for re-signing Tomas Tatar and another million earmarked for re-signing Andreas Athanasiou. Vanek made quite an impact for the Wings last season, and his chemistry was palpable with almost everyone. What Vanek lacks in speed he ameliorates with through-the-roof hockey smarts. The Red Wings traded Vanek at last season's deadline because it was clear they would miss the playoffs, so they unloaded some expiring contracts for picks. At the time, Vanek had 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 points in 48 games.
