(CHICAGO) - The Detroit Tigers made a bunch of late-night roster moves after dropping their game to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. Most notably, Dixon Machado, who showed unlikely power to start the season but has not hit well throughout, has been designated for assignment. Infielder Ronny Rodriguez was recalled from Triple-A Toledo, taking Machado’s spot on the active roster. Rodriguez is hitting .338 with nine home runs and 20 doubles in 63 games in Toledo. He is 18 for 41 (.439 average) with five doubles and a triple in 10 games since being sent back to the Mud Hens from the Tigers in late June. Machado, 26, is hitting .206 this season with an on-base percentage of .263 and slugging percentage of .290. He is out of minor-league options and will have the option of choosing free agency if he clears waivers. Machado was previously designated for assignment in 2013. The Tigers also optioned right-handed reliever Warwick Saupold to Triple-A Toledo. Saupold has a 4.46 ERA in 31 appearances this season. Victor Alcantara was added to the 40-man roster, essentially taking Machado’s spot on the 40-man roster and Saupold’s spot on the active roster. Alcantara was acquired from the L.A. Angels for Cameron Maybin two offseasons ago.
