Serena Williams makes it to Wimbledon quarterfinals
Tuesday Jul 10, 2018 12:00am

(LONDON) – Serena Williams' Wimbledon tournament rolls on, as the women's quarterfinals will be without a top-10 player for the first time in the Open era. Williams beat qualifier Evgeniya Rodina 6-2, 6-2 on Monday to advance. Williams will next face Italy's Camila Giorgi, who beat American Madison Brengle 6-4, 6-4. As the No. 25 seed, Williams is in the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the 13th time. No. 7 Karolina Pliskova, the last of the top-10 women, lost 6-3, 7-6 (1) to Kiki Bertens. Pliskova had been the only female player in the top 10 to reach the fourth round, the fewest in a Grand Slam event in the Open era following a slew of upsets in the first week. Bertens will next face 13th-seeded Julia Goerges, who beat Donna Vekic of Croatia 6-3, 6-2 to secure her first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance. Following Pliskova's exit, No. 11 Angelique Kerber is the highest remaining seed in the women's draw. She advanced Monday with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory over Belinda Bencic and will next face Daria Kasatkina of Russia.
