Tigers demote Stumpf, place Hicks on IR
(UNDATED) - Daniel Stumpf’s bags were packed when the Detroit Tigers’ clubhouse opened to the media on Wednesday morning, his locker cleaned out as he made his way around the room saying his goodbyes. After Stumpf struggled again Tuesday night, the Tigers sent him to Triple-A Toledo, where they hope he can find success again with his slider. The pitch has been ineffective for much of the season, especially against left-handed hitters. After a solid season in 2017, Stumpf never got comfortable in 2018, as evidenced by the good swings opponents were taking off him. Stumpf, 27, posted a 7.11 ERA in 41 appearances this season. Last year, he had a 3.82 ERA in 55 appearances. With his departure, the Tigers will be without a lefty in their bullpen. Taking Stumpf’s place is righty Artie Lewicki, who arrived just a couple of hours before game time on Wednesday. The Tigers made another roster move on Wednesday morning, placing catcher John Hicks on the 10-day disabled list with right groin tightness. Hicks had been dealing with the issue for a while and will have an MRI to determine the severity of the strain. Hicks, 28, is hitting .260 with nine home runs. He has served as the backup to catcher James McCann and received plenty of time at first base since Miguel Cabrera was placed on the DL in June. Catcher Grayson Greiner was recalled from Toledo to take Hicks’ roster spot.
