(FORT WAYNE) - The American Red Cross is putting out an urgent call for more disaster volunteers in the Fort Wayne area as emergency responses continue to climb. The organization says its Northeast Chapter has answered more than 200 disasters so far this year, most of them home fires. Volunteers helped families with temporary shelter, meals, and basic health services -- often within hours of an emergency.

Chapter Executive Director Jennifer Sexton says the need for volunteers rises sharply this time of year. Home fire responses typically jump nearly 20 percent during the holiday season, and more than 1,100 people statewide rely on Red Cross assistance in November and December alone.

Residents interested in joining the Disaster Action Team can learn more at redcross.org. Financial donations are also welcomed to support ongoing emergency response efforts.
