(STURGIS) – A man is facing multiple charges following an investigation by the Sturgis Police Department.

Director of Public Safety Ryan Banaszak (bah-NAZ-ack) says on March 20, the Sturgis Police were contacted and advised that a woman had been a victim of an assault in Sturgis, and was at Parkview LaGrange Hospital. Officers contacted the women and learned she had been held against her will for the past 12 days by her boyfriend. During that time she was assaulted by the suspect multiple times, and periodically restrained to prevent her from leaving.

On the morning of March 20, the victim was able to escape and found a ride to Parkview LaGrange to be treated for severe injuries.

During the course of the investigation, Sturgis Police executed a search warrant at the suspect's home. With the help of the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department, officers were able to located the suspect, a 37 year old Sturgis man, at a family member's house and take him into custody. He was arraigned on charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, domestic violence and unlawful confinement. The suspect was able to post bond and was released on March 23.

Sturgis Police continued to investigate the incident and on March 24 they learned additional information which led them to seek additional charges of 8 counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct against the suspect. Sturgis Police and Sheriff's Deputies executed a search warrant in the Mendon area on March 25 and took the suspect into custody once again.

He is being held in the St. Joseph County Jail waiting for his arraignment.
