(COLDWATER) – A suspect has been charged with arson for a house fire in the 200 block of South Jefferson Street in Coldwater.

Branch County District Court officials say a female suspect is going through mental evaluations after a petition was filed in Branch County Probate Court. An arraignment will take place after the evaluation is finished.

The Coldwater Fire Department was called to a house fire just after 10:30 AM on March 18. Coldwater Fire Chief David Schmaltz says when his department arrived, there was heavy smoke coming out of the two story, wood frame house.

The Bronson, Quincy and Lakeland Fire Departments were called in to provide mutual aid.

Schmaltz says the windy conditions made it difficult to battle the blaze, but it was eventually brought under control and put out. The house is a total loss.

Coldwater Police helped that day with traffic control in the area. A witness told officers they saw one of the occupants of the home set the fire and then leave. Police found the female suspect a short time later and took her into custody.
