(WATERLOO) – An Angola man is in custody after a pursuit in DeKalb County Sunday morning.

The Auburn Police Department received a report about a catalytic converter theft from a vehicle just after 5 AM. The theft allegedly took place in the parking lot of the Baymont Inn, located at 306 Touring Drive.

A short time later, officers from the Waterloo Marshal's office noticed a vehicle matching the description of the one involved in the theft, exiting I-69, and drive through a red light at the intersection of I-69 and U.S. 6.

Officers followed the vehicle west on U.S. 6 and made a traffic stop. The driver initially stopped, and then drove away, heading north on County Road 27 at speeds of 75 to 80 MPH. The vehicle turned east on County Road 18. As the driver reached the end of the road, he jumped out of the vehicle and ran away. He was apprehended after a brief chase.

The driver, 39 year old David Zervos of Angola, was arrested on felony charges of resisting law enforcement and possession of a syringe, along with misdemeanor charges of possession of paraphernalia and driving while suspended. An unidentified passenger in the vehicle was not charged.

Police say the catalytic converter was found in the back seat of the vehicle.

Zervos was taken to the DeKalb County Jail. He is being held on a $7,500 bond. The incident remains under investigation.
