(LAKE JAMES, IN) – A death investigation has turned into a homicide investigation in Northeast Indiana.

The Steuben County Sheriff's Department was sent to a residence at 395 Lake James Lane 200 East Wednesday around 12:30 PM after receiving reports of an unresponsive woman inside the home.

Deputies arrived and found a woman, identified as 82 year old Wilma Ball of Angola, dead from a stab wound. Officials say deputies noticed unusual and suspicious circumstances at the home, and called in the Indiana State Police to assist.

Friends and neighbors went looking for Ball after she did not show up to a planned get-together. They then called 911 when Ball didn't respond.

An autopsy was performed on Ball at the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center in Fort Wayne. Her death has been ruled a homicide by the Steuben County Coroner's Office.

Authorities have not said if Ball was targeted and no suspect information has been released.
