(LANSING) – The Michigan Lottery wants to let citizens know about two scams they have become aware of.

One of them involves a person receiving a phone call, letter, or e-mail to let them know they have won a large lottery prize and have to pay a fee to collect that prize. The other scam is when a person is once again contacted by phone call, e-mail or letter, this time by someone who says they are a lottery prize winner. The scammer tells the person that they will share their prizes if that person will send them money.

In both cases, if the person says they will do this, then they will be asked by the scammer to send money through electronic funds transfer, a cashier's check or by meeting them in person to get the money.

In some instances, Michigan Lottery officials say after getting money from their victim, the scam artist will come back and ask for more because of unexpected processing costs or fees, or they will use another excuse to get more money.

The Michigan Lottery says they process all prize claims for free, and players need to have a valid winning ticket to claim a prize. If you have not bought a Lottery ticket or played a game, you can not win a prize.
