(FLORENCE TOWNSHIP) – A man is in custody after leading authorities on a two state chase.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite says on June 27 at 10:46 PM, his deputies were responding to an incident of shots fired in Florence Township, when a suspicious vehicle was observed coming from the area of the incident.

Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle on Constantine Road near Withers Road because of an equipment violation, but it took off at a high rate of speed.

Deputies pursued the suspect auto, which crashed into a parked vehicle on U.S. 131 near Withers Road. A woman in the parked vehicle received minor injuries. The suspect auto rammed into a patrol car, and the driver threw numerous items from his vehicle in an attempt to hit the pursuing police cars.

The chase went through Constantine and Mottville Townships before it went into Elkhart County, Indiana. The suspect struck a mail box and drove through a yard before crashing into a fence and coming to a stop. The driver ran away from the scene but was apprehended in a field after a short chase.

The driver, a 32 year old Constantine man, is being held in the Elkhart County Jail on a charge of possession of meth. Additional charges of receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle, fleeing and eluding along with felonious assault on a police officer are being requested in St. Joseph County.
