(STURGIS) – The City of Sturgis would like to remind residents about their ordinance regarding fireworks.

In Michigan, consumer fireworks are permissible from June 29 until July 4 until 11:45 PM each evening.

While fireworks are allowed in the City of Sturgis under State law, the City's noise ordinances is in effect and may be enforced as it pertains to fireworks displays. During the period of June 29 to July 4, reasonable levels of noise associated with fireworks with be allowed until 11:45 PM. After that time, the noise ordinance will be enforced for all fireworks-related complaints.

Michigan State Law prohibits the use of fireworks on any public property, church property or another person's property without their express permission. It also prohibits persons from using any consumer fireworks if they are under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance.

While the use of fireworks is a fun way to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, necessary precautions and responsible adult supervision to prevent fire risks as well as injury should be priority.

Some basic fireworks safety tips include: only use fireworks outdoors; obey local laws; always have water, a hose or a bucket handy; only use fireworks as they are intended; never light a dud firework; use common sense when lighting off fireworks and never use homemade fireworks or illegal explosives.

The City of Sturgis wants everyone to be safe and enjoy the holiday weekend.
