(FREMONT) – No injuries were reported Tuesday morning when a semi leaked nitric acid at a truck stop in northern Steuben County.

Steuben County authorities say the leak was discovered around 7 AM at the Pilot Truck Stop. The truck stop was evacuated, while people who lived near the area were told to remain in their homes. As a precaution, a six mile section of I-69 was closed down between the Kinderhook Exit in Michigan and Exit 354 in Steuben County.

The Fremont, Angola and Lakeland Fire Departments were called to the scene along with Hazardous Material teams from Northeast Indiana to clean up the liquid.

Authorities say shutting down the highway caused a traffic issue on the open roads around the area. The Steuben County and Branch County Sheriff's Departments helped direct traffic, along with troopers with the Indiana State Police and Michigan State Police.

Officials say they are still investigating what caused the leak.
