(CENTREVILLE) – Sentence has been handed down to a man accused of shooting an old friend in Sturgis in October of 2020.

St. Joseph County Circuit Court officials say 36 year old Erik Davis was sentenced to 15 to 50 years in prison. He plead guilty to second degree murder in the shooting death of 33 year old Doug Smith.

Sturgis Police were called to 504 North Prospect Street on October 2, 2020 to investigate a reported shooting. Officers found Smith suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Sturgis Hospital where he later died.

Davis was arrested a short time later. Police discovered during their investigation that Smith along with his girlfriend and another individual came to Davis' house. Everyone started to drink and eventually, Davis wanted everyone to leave, but no one did.

Police say Davis went into the house and came back with an AR-15 rifle and again told everyone to leave. He then went back into the house and returned with two pistols he owned. Smith and Davis started yelling at each other before Davis shot Smith.
