No Monkey Pox In St. Joseph County Michigan

(UNDATED) – The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency wants to clear up some confusion for residents of St. Joseph County.

A West Michigan television station has reported that Monkey Pox has been confirmed in St. Joseph County, Indiana. They rebroadcast a story from a South Bend TV station, and posted a story about Monkey Box in Northern Indiana.

However, Kristina Dewey, Health Educator and Public Information & Communications Specialist with the CHA says their offices have been flooded with calls from people thinking the Monkey Pox has been detected in St. Joseph County, Michigan.

Dewey says there are NO reported cases of Monkey Pox in St. Joseph County, Michigan. The case in question is in St. Joseph County, Indiana.

The CHA says Monkey Pox is a rare infection caused by a virus. It can cause a rash that may look like pimples or blisters, and sometimes can cause flu-like illness and symptoms.

The virus can be transmitted from an infected person to an uninfected person through Direct contact with the rash, scabs, or bodily fluids; Prolonged, face-to-face contact, or during intimate physical contact, such as kissing, cuddling, and/or sexual activity; And by touching items such as clothing and bedding that have been touched by the infectious rash or bodily fluids Pregnant women can also transmit the virus to the fetus through the placenta.
