(WAYNE TOWNSHIP) – Two people were injured Wednesday when a vehicle struck a Dowagiac School Bus.

Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke says his department was called to 6:43 AM Wednesday to investigate a personal injury crash in Wayne Township. Deputies say that a Dowagiac School bus, driven by 40 year old Benjamin Hoops, was heading south on Atwood Road. Also on board were four Dowagiac School students and another bus driver, 45 year old Roy Payne of Dowagiac.

Hoops disregarded the stop sign at the intersection of Dewey Lake Street, and was struck by a westbound auto, driven by 26 year old Christopher Weber of Dowagiac. The collision sent Weber’s vehicle off the road and into a ditch, while the bus ended up on its side in the roadway.

Behnke says three of the students were turned over to the parents at the scene. The fourth student along with Payne, were taken to Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac to be treated for their injuries. Everyone was wearing their seatbelts.

Assisting deputies were the Dowagiac Police and Fire Departments, the Wayne Township Fire Department, the Pokagon Tribal Police, Pride Care Ambulance and the Van Buren Ambulance Service.

The accident is still under investigation.
